Nitrates Nitrates can occur naturally in surface and groundwater at levels that are not typically a health concern. High levels of nitrate in well water is usually due to poor well construction, well location or faulty disposal systems for human or animal waste products.
Arsenic can get into a water supply from soil deposits or from contamination from industrial or agricultural sources. Arsenic generally comes from certain rock formations if levels of ground water drop significantly. Higher levels of arsenic in private wells may result from fertilizer or industrial waste products.
Lead can enter into water supplies as a result of pipes deteriorating - especially where water is rather acidic or low in mineral levels that leads to corrosion. The most common issue with respect to lead is related to brass fixtures with lead solder.
A general test for bacterial contamination in water is the test for total coliform bacteria, which yields an overall reading of a water supply's condition. E. coli is a main species of the fecal coliform bacteria - viewed as the strongest indicator of fecal contamination.
Knowing if a water test is necessary in your current or prospective home may depend on a variety of factors. Is the water supply fed by a well? Are there buried fuel or oil tanks on the property? Are you purchasing or do you own a home with lead water supply lines? The Environmental Protection Agency provides a guideline to follow in making a test determination. Get started today to have the water tested at your home or business.

Homes built before the 1980s often contain asbestos in insulation, floor tiles, siding, pipe wrap, and ceiling textures. Left undisturbed it may be harmless - but renovations, damage, or deterioration can release dangerous fibers into the air.
Buying, selling, or refinancing a manufactured home with an FHA, VA, USDA, or many conventional loans usually requires more than a standard home inspection. Lenders need a site-specific structural certification that the home is on a permanent foundation and that loads are transferred safely to the ground.
The sewer line is one of the most expensive repairs a homeowner can face - and it is completely invisible during a standard home inspection. We push a high-resolution camera through the line from the home to the city main so you know what you are buying. Currently offered in the Grand Forks area only.
